The Not So Modern Drummer Magazine Snare Drum Olympics and Cymbal Olympics has been rescheduled for February 15, 2011. The events were originally scheduled for September 1with final public display and judging at the Ohio Drum Show on Sept 19. George Lawrence, publisher of the magazine and producer of its events says that the Olympics and the Ohio Show have both grown to the point that they cannot be produced at the same time as they have in the past. “This growth is a good problem for us to have. We added Keith Carlock and his band Rudder’s performance to the Ohio Drum Show and we started the Cymbal Olympics this year. We are also expanding to include sales of all the Olympics instruments via YouTube videos that link to the SnareDrumOlympics.com shopping cart. All of these things take time and manpower to produce and both will be better served as separate events.
The NSMD Cymbal Olympics is a contest among cymbal manufacturers and cymbal smiths to see who can “out-cymbal” the others. The event showcases the best of the best in cymbal making. The instruments are evaluated by a panel of judges in blind and subjective tests, after which the cymbals are displayed at the Ohio Drum Show for the public judging. The pictures and scores of the cymbals are published in Not So Modern Drummer magazine and sent as press releases to trade and consumer drum magazines, and internet drumming forums. Video of the judging is published on YouTube and the NotSoModernDrummer.com website. All audio and video is available to contestants to use for their own marketing. A certificate of placement is awarded each entry. from the world’s most famous manufacturers, custom cymbal makers and hobbyists are included. The awards presented by the NSMD Olympics have been used extensively in percussion manufacturers’ advertisements.
