Hello fellow drummers,
The weather is beginning to warm up some now, and the trees and flowers are putting forth their blooms. I am featuring a really beautiful and classic Slingerland Radio King set this month to celebrate the coming of Spring. This set is a late fifties white marine pearl Gene Krupa Deluxe Radio King Ensemble. The drum sizes are bass drum 24"X14" mounted tom 13"X9" floor tom 16"X16" and optional floor tom 20"X16". The oval black and brass pre serial number badge is from the Chicago factory. This dates them before 1960. The Niles badge appears after 1960 when the factory moved.

Hello Drum Friends,
A few months ago I saw a suitcase drum set in one of the drummer magazines and decided to make one for myself. It was really fun to build out of stuff I mostly already had. I went down to the local antique shop to look for a good solid wooden suitcase to use for my kick drum. I took along a mallet to wop the suitcases to get the right one. The lady asked me, "what on earth are you doing". I told her what I was about to do with the vintage suitcase and she didn't approve. Oh well. I found out later the case I chose was hers. Her son says He can't wait to see the suitcase drums.
One cool idea is to make everything you are going to use fit inside the case. It's cool to walk in with just an old suitcase, and in a few minutes be jamming. The case I used has an old simulated leather covering. I went on E-Bay and bought some travel stickers to dress it up. The stickers are not old, they are reproductions, but I used some steel wool to them to make them look vintage. I might have gone overboard putting on stickers. I always had to put every single decal on my model cars too. The suitcase has a nice tone and when its miked it really sounds great. It's loud enough for acoustic guitars and piano without a mike.
Happy Valentine's Day,
This is the month of love, and I have some drums to show you that you will love. If you don't love them it's OK. because I love them anyway. These drums are early 1970's Ludwig Standard drums with Ruby Strata wrap. There are two sets shown in the photos. One set is a Hollywood configuration with 22"X14" bass drum, 16"X16" floor tom, 13"X9" mounted tom, and 12"X8" mounted tom. The snare drum is chrome with 8 lugs. The set has some matching Standard hardware. The other kit is a Downbeat configuration with a 20"X14" bass drum, 14"X14" floor tom, and 12"X8" mounted tom. The snare is a matching wood shell with 8 lugs.
Happy New Year,
I decided I needed to feature one of my vintage Gretsch kits for all the Gretsch drum lovers. I must admit it was Ludwig drums that started it all for me, but I soon fell in love with Gretsch drums as well. Ringo was my first drum hero and then Charlie Watts was next. We know Charlie was a Gretsch man and still is to this day. This set is from the 1960's and has the round badge drum collectors love to see. They are wrapped in Aqua Satin Flame. I will tell you why this color had such an appeal to me later. The mounted toms are 12"X8". They are left and right 12" toms. This was an early '60's trend. The floor tom is 16"X16". The bass drum is a 20"X14". The snare drum is a 14"X5" chrome over brass.
Hello Friends,
The drum kit I want to feature this month is a Rogers Holiday set. Since this is the holiday season I thought it appropriate to show these. Those of you who have Rogers drums know how well built and cool they are. The drum sizes are; bass drum 22"X14", mounted toms 8"X12", and 9"X13", floor tom 16"X16". The wrap is black strata pearl. It is very similar to oyster black pearl. This kit has the script Rogers badge and paper tags inside that indicate they came from the Fullerton factory. This dates them after 1969. The interiors are grey speckled paint. The hardware is Swivo-Matic. The lugs are beavertails. These drums are very sweet looking and sound great.
