Here is a particular French snare drum, because this brand was specialized to the wind instrument manufactory. They had produced some percussions but especially marching percussions... This snare drum is part of a complete "jazz band" ("jazz band" was the drum set name in France before the WWII).

The brand:

Gaillard & Loiselet is the successor of several manufacturers who exist and succeeded since 1812... This brand has succeeded to "Couturier Pelisson Blanchon". Gaillard & Loiselet was created in the early 1930s and exist still exist on the early 1960s. The factory and the manufacture was in Lyon, at 273, Cours Lafayette and produced essentially wind instruments (trumpet, saxophone, tuba, etc…) and some marching drums and bass drums.

The snare drum:

This snare drum is on metric size 38cm x 9,8cm (14,96 inch x 3,85 inch), with aluminum shell, it is very light ! No reinforcing rings, roundish bearing edge, and just a little snare bed. The tension of the calf skins is made with 12 steel & brass single tension thumbscrews and the strainer is the standard model used in France in 20/30’s era…

GAILLARD & LOISELET is stamped on the shell, and this snare drum dates from 1945 (stamped in the star under the brand). GAILLARD & LOISELET was more a marching instruments manufacturer ... This snare drum is designed like a marching drum, and this snare conception was very late compared the snare drums produced on this era ! But we can't forgotten that in 1945, the WWII had just finished in France...
