Mike Clark: Words of Wisdom - Chapter 21

April 18, 2019 David Barsalou
Photo-Mike-Clark.jpg

Another new chapter in our ongoing series of quotes, conversations, commentary, and updates with jazz drumming legend Mike Clark. Mike’s keen observations provide numerous insights into “all things music”. Mike tells it like it is…The good, the bad, and everything else in between:

MD 2019 Readers Poll -

I came in 4th in the Classic Jazz Category...I am deeply honored…There are some Baaaad Cats in all Categories!

Had a conversation with Lenny White about featuring the bass drum. Some don’t like it and some don’t realize many modernists do. It puts a fat booty on the band! I just listened to the bass and drums side of the mix on Gingerbread Boy with Tony Feathers throughout - But you can’t hear it unless you change up the mix… Swings Hard!

Many people know Lenny White from Return to Forever He is innovative and brilliant… But, I think everyone who loves jazz should go hear how Lenny and Buster Williams put the groove together. Deep Swing and on the natural...It’s beyond words like pocket and time etc. - Please check that out!

I’ve been pondering my career. You know how some cats have one name like Sting? From now on I’m going to be known as... “Stonkton”

I love playing jazz at night… But I’m digging being on the couch watching some Sci-Fi.
