30th Annual Chicago Drum Show Report - Video

May 31, 2021 George Lawrence

Thanks to Mike Malone for this jazzy run through video of the show. Our Not So Modern Drummer/Famous Drums/DrumSellers.com booth can be seen at 2:19 to 2:37

I can’t remember how early in March we got word from Rob Cook that the Chicago Drum Show was on for May 2021. There was some discussion among exhibitors about whether to attend: Is it too early considering the pandemic? Will masks and social distancing and proof of vaccination be required? Will there be enough attendance to make it worthwhile? The over-riding answer for most was “I want to go to Chicago, feed my addiction for vintage and custom drums, and feel normal”. So, Georgetta and I geared up for our booth, booked a hotel, drove 9 hours from Memphis, exhibited our drums and other products at the show, saw a lot of old friends, made a lot of new friends, ate a lot of expensive food, and treated ourselves to a mini working vacation. Both exhibitors and attendees were smiling a lot and remarking to each other about how great it felt to be at a drum show again.

I estimate there were about half as many exhibitors as usual and half as many attendees. I’m sure Rob expected this but I’m glad he decided to go ahead with the show even with the late notice (and I hope he at least broke even). I feel that because it was held this year under extenuating circumstances, next year’s show will be HUGE.

There was no performance stage in the west hall this year probably due to the late notice to the major drum manufacturers and their endorsing artists. Rob is pondering about no stage there in the future either, which I think is a wise move. That would increase the space for more exhibitors. Clinics could be held in one of the other buildings on the property, or off site.

Anyway, I encourage everyone to attend the 2022 show, exhibit at the show, and spread the word! Having to go through 2020 with no Chicago Drum Show was a drag, wasn’t it? We did not realize how much we appreciated it until it was taken away from us by the pandemic. We were going through withdrawals! Support all the drum shows in the nation and other parts of the world. It’s a good thing.

We will be adding more pics and videos as they come in.
