Joseph Barthelette’s Wood and Weather Drum Shop recently held their big grand opening on June 25, 2021... Located at 110 Main Street in South Hadley Falls, Massachusetts.
Prior to his own retail store, Joseph was renting out space in a large Indian Orchard, MA industrial building. At that time he was combining the Wood and Weather website with mass media buzz to generate much of his business. Joe's new address is a large two story building housing an enormous array of vintage snares, sets, and cymbals literally stacked up from floor to ceiling... It reminded me of the first time I walked into Charley Donnelly’s Newington, CT Drum Center in the mid - 1970’s -- Only on a much larger scale.
Joseph began playing the drums at age fourteen. Within a couple of years he had turned his passion into a full-time business. His first turnaround was an early 1960's blue sparkle Ludwig kit found on Craigslist. "It looked and sounded incredible". Joe cleaned it up - sold it, and doubled his money.
In 2016, he began setting up as a vendor at the annual 'Chicago Drum Show'. Selling out that first year... He made a huge profit on what he described as "unusual stuff". This included, a 1960's Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl Ringo kit sizes 14"x 20" Bass Drum - 8"x12" Small Tom and a 14"x14" Floor Tom. Joe also had a Mod Orange 1960's Ludwig kit 14"x 22"- 9"x13" and 16"x16" -- Also, a 1960's Ludwig Psychedelic Red kit in identical sizes.
By 2017, Joseph was networking with other dealers and music stores on the east coast looking for additional inventory. He also began his annual trek to Nashville, Tennessee and Kansas City, Missouri on his never ending hunt for drums. Over the years, he has acquired numerous collections just through word of mouth. He recently purchased the entire new/old stock of Joe's Drum Shop on the North Shore in Beverly, Massachusetts.
Frequently approached with offers... Joe is always interested in buying, selling, or trading. Having a 'brick and mortar' retail store makes such transactions easier. It also gives him opportunity to provide other services including restoration and repairs. Drummer, Tyler Silva is the man responsible for doing much of this truly incredible work. The Circuit Drum Academy is also housed at Wood and Weather... Educator, Colin Jalpert offers lessons on drums, percussion, and beat making in-person, and remotely.
Having a permanent location gives Joseph the best of both world's - Combining direct retail with an ongoing Internet presence. This gives him an opportunity to keep expanding his connections in the vintage drum market.
