Marc Potocsky : The Best Of Both Worlds

November 29, 2025 David Barsalou

Drummer and Visual Artist Marc Potocsky is the definition of a true ‘Renaissance Man’… He is equally comfortable holding either drumsticks or paintbrushes. Also known as ‘Moe Potts’ -- Marc discovered both of his amazing talents at an early age. At 14, he started playing in bands, ‘The Other Side’, United Soul’ and the ‘Wild Flowers’. He excelled in both Art and Music classes, and performed with the junior high band.

Marc attended Lee High School in New Haven, CT playing drums in the marching band while continuing serious art studies. At age 16, Moe and his band ‘The Other Side’ morphed into the hard rock band ‘Quake’. Also, in his senior year, Marc was offered a full-time scholarship to The Cooper Union Art School. He had to make a difficult career decision… Go to college, or play music full-time. Music it was… It was then that Marc decided that he had to put his artistic pursuits on hold.

Afterwards, when ‘SWAN’ drummer Bobby T Torello moved down south Marc joined the group and remained with them for five years. After making some serious connections with legendary promoters Jim Koplik and Shelly Finkel who were managers of ‘The Laughing Dogs’, they asked Moe to join the band.

“Marc – Moe Potts – A friend since 1967. I had a drum exercise called the ‘pain train’ back then and he started doing that with me. He was a great drummer and a great artist. In 1970, Marc painted Yosemite Sam on my Harley. I was proud to pass on any gigs I had. When I moved down South – I handed the Johnny Winter gig to him – which I was proud to do. He also custom painted two of my kits. A Yosemite Sam kit like Dino Danelli’s – and a set modeled after a World War II bomber. This kit looks like real metal with rivets and includes Air Force logos, and vintage pin-up girls. Marc is one of the best people to walk the Earth… A great friend – A great drummer, and a great artist.”
-- Bobby T Torello

Marc was getting noticed while performing at the legendary CBGB in New York City with ‘The Laughing Dogs’. They toured extensively while also recording two albums for the Columbia Records label. After the ‘Dogs’ broke up it was at this time that Moe was asked to play drums for Johnny Winter.

Not long after, Marc was playing and recording with Michael Bolton, Billy Falcon, Ian Hunter, Mick Ronson, and guitarist Rod “Bottleneck” Price of Foghat, and numerous others. He also appeared at ‘Farm Aid’ - MTV, and on the Johnny Carson Show with Billy Falcon. It was at the Carson appearance where he had his photograph taken on Ed Shaughnessy’s drums.

At the height of his drumming career -Moe was endorsed by Mapex Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Attack Drumheads, and Pro-Mark Drumsticks.

Trading in Drumsticks for Paint Brushes…

After 35 years in the music business, Marc put away the drumsticks and began a full-time career as a fine artist and portrait painter. He opened MJP Studios, which is a full service decorative painting company located in Branford, CT. Moe has painted many of the iconic musicians adorning the walls of the legendary ‘Toads Place’ in New Haven, CT.

He also did a painting of New York Yankee legend Derek Jeter for an auction through the Connecticut Cancer Foundation… Autographed by Derek, the work sold for $15,000. All of the profits went to helping families dealing with cancer.

In October, 2025 – Marc had a solo exhibition of his work at the Naumann Gallery in North Branford, CT. The show titled – ‘Resonance: Portraits of Musical icons’ featured photo-realistic images of legendary musicians including – John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, and numerous others.

In early 2026, Moe will be showing additional new work from his ‘The Art Of Toad’s Place’ series of music legends… Once again at the Naumann Gallery.
