For nine decades, the Slingerland Artist Model All Gold and Engraved snare drum had existed only as a ghost in the pages of their 1928 drum and accessories catalogue.  At this time, the Slingerland Drum Company had recently acquired the Liberty Drum Company, a strategic acquisition that immediately allowed them to compete with industry leaders Leedy and Ludwig & Ludwig.

Yet, despite the company's grand ambitions, no physical example of this gold-plated and exquisitely engraved masterpiece has ever surfaced in the modern era.  Ever hopeful, but pushing history to reveal itself, I decided in 2015, to commission the building of a museum-quality reproduction in the 5 X 14 size configuration.

To bring this legendary instrument to life, I turned to the only person capable of such a feat: master drum craftsman Adrian Kirchler.  Known worldwide for his unequaled skill in historically influenced metal drum fabrication and restoration, Adrian approached the project with the reverence of an archaeologist.  He painstakingly analyzed the original 1928 catalog illustration, deciphering the intricate floral engraving patterns and overall physical specification details that had been lost to time.

Adrian’s highly skilled hands transformed raw metal into this breathtaking tribute, which is highlighted by the gleam of timeless gold plating and precise detail of the engraved scrollwork.

Holding this finished 5 X 14 snare drum today is like grasping an elusive and alternate timeline, a tangible connection to Slingerland's early glory days.  And while it satisfies a desire to see and hear such a revered instrument in the flesh, I remain hopeful that an authentic original version of this drum, in any of the originally offered three sizes, will one day emerge from a dusty and forgotten attic or basement.

Until that day comes, this AK masterpiece for me, stands as the ultimate celebration of what was the golden age of American snare drum manufacturing.. and what might yet come to light.
