Before Joe Partridge and I started the Famous Drum brand (“You must have heard of us - we’re Famous!”), I built three sets of custom painted drums for a catalog of what was to be the “Lawrence Drum Company” and had some great pics made of the shells. This was in the early mid 2000s when I was building drums at George’s Drum Shop. I abandoned the Lawrence badge name in favor of Famous, but these drums were never badged. These were maple shell drums with Slingerland type lugs and hoops, die cast hoop claws and gull wing spurs. The paint job was done by Tony ? who did some custom paint jobs for Sonor. This particular blue paint I named “Too Much Baby Blue Sparkle”. The sizes are 10x9, 12x10, 14x14 and 18x18 bass drum. There is also a 16x 16 bass drum that is not pictured. I sold this set to a buddy of mine , Keith McFerrin, who was a customer of my George’s Drum Shop. Keith moved to Memphis during Covid and reminded me of this kit. I had forgotten that he had these drums. He wanted me to have them so we arranged a trade for a Gretsch drum set. I use these drums in my music room to teach and practice on. They are outfitted with Remo Silent Stroke mesh heads and some “holy” low volume cymbals to save what little hearing I have left. The “ too much champagne sparkle” and “too much orange sparkle” kits were sold to other customers and were larger sizes. There was also a one off ‘Harley Davidson” design painted on a tom shell that I tried to license to the Harley Davidson Company but they were not interested. The paint scheme did not work out because my painter’s shop got bought by the city of Lincoln Nebraska in an eminent domain deal. The paint was too thick anyway. I had asked him to put more sparkle pieces in the paint than normal. I’m glad to have these drums back in my possession and will probably badge them with the Famous badges at some point.
