This is my very rare 1970s 6.5” x 14” Color Code No. 2201-Clear Ludwig No. 415KP Vistalite Super Sensitive Blue & Olive Pointy Badge Snare Drum.
When I found this snare the shell and badge were gorgeous, but all the hardware was completely roached out, rusted and beyond saving for such a scarce drum. Many parts were just plain missing or incorrect.
So, complete disassembly and cleaning was in order.
I purchased brand new Ludwig bow tie center lugs, new Ludwig S.S. wires, all new tension rods, and brand new heavy duty 3.0 MM chrome rims.
Luckily the strainer/throw mechanism was in perfect working order but needed some parts replaced including the sliders and guards, and a deep clean and oiling.
I considered doing a total abrasive polish of the shell but upon further inspection after cleaning it only has a few minor scratches. Besides, I wanted to retain the original vintage integrity as much as possible.
Okay, all that aside, this snare is a CANNON, and the namesake retains its reputation, SUPER SENSITIVE!!!
This is a very nice addition to my arsenal of sound.
