Thanks for all the years of Not So Modern Drummer, it’s always a good read.
Following up on your latest online edition I’m submitting this unique Frank E Rice, steel shell snare with wood hoops and single tension rods. I believe it’s early 1900’s and with Chicago on the badge perhaps a custom drum from a Ludwig or Slingerland employee? Picked this up many years ago
and couldn’t find any info on Mr Rice. I’ve only seen two of these (other than mine), one at Revival drums in Portland Oregon and the other at an Oklahoma drum museum (PAS?) which apparently is no longer there.
This is a really well built snare, even with the fixed snare throw and single tension rods. It’s crisp and a joy to play, although I don’t take it out for travel due to the vintage wood rims and play carefully when at home.
