For a brief period of time Craviotto Drums partnered with C & C drums to offer a short run of snare drums and drum sets in various shades of real abalone shell material that was applied to the solid maple Craviotto shells.

Steve Maxwell informed me last year that he was adding me to The Craviotto Drum Co. Education Endorsers group. That alone is a great honor but along with this honor I was also awarded a Craviotto snare drum of my choice!

Fred Gretsch still owns the Leedy name, and several years ago I asked Fred Gretsch if we could do some special Leedy USA drums using Craviotto solid shells. I liked the idea because Leedy was one of the companies that used solid shells for their snares at various times, and I thought it would be great to do some solid shell snares made in the USA with the Leedy name, but with Johnny Craviotto's incredible shells.

The Life and Times of Master Craftsman, Johnny Craviotto

So with the help of the master boat builder and much trial-and-error, Johnny began making his own one-ply drum shells.  By 1984-85, Johnny had started to perfect his technique.  Word of his drums spread until it caught the attention of Billy Gibson (Huey Lewis & The News).  Billy asked Johnny to join forces with him to form a drum company, the Select (later changed to “Solid”) Drum Company.
