Mystery: What drum shop does Frank Zappa's "Drum Shop" art collage depict?

December 6, 2015 George Lawrence

An episode of the series "History Detectives" featuring Cal Schenkel, Bobby and Gail Zappa investigating whether a Collage painting is or isn't by Frank Zappa. Original broadcast hosted on video.pbs.org/video/2253617192

I am a gushing Frank Zappa fan. If ever there was a prime mover for my personal rebellious and irreverent nature it is Frank Zappa. My favorite Zappa quote -

“The most important thing in art is the frame. For painting: literally; for other arts: figuratively – because, without this humble appliance, you can’t know where The Art stops and The Real World begins. You have to put a “box” around it because otherwise, what is that shit on the wall?”

Frank Zappa, The Real Frank Zappa Book, page 140, Frank Zappa and Peter Occhiogrosso, 1989

In addition to being the musical genius and political dissident that we all know, Frank was also an artist (and a drummer). One particular piece he created was lost then found and an investigation by PBS turned up some surprising ties to the drum shop world.

A life-long art collector spotted a striking piece in a South Carolina thrift store, a graphic collage of percussion instruments, intrigued by the signature “FZ.” His research led him to an intriguing possibility: Rock and Roll legend Frank Zappa. Gwen Wright meets with friends and biographers of Zappa to see if she can find out whether Zappa made this collage.

Please watch the video above. It is just sooooooooooooo interesting.
