I got this drum from a European seller who has sold me a drum or two before. I usually don’t collect European drums but this one was intriguing enough and somewhat historical so I went for it. A special thanks goes to my good friend, fellow collector and restorer extraordinaire Emmanuel of olDrums Vintage & Custom oldrums@sfr.fr for helping me to identify and date this drum.

I got this one off of Reverb. This drum has been around for a while and the owner worked with me on an even lower price. WFL two-tone pearl drums are pretty scarce so this was a good drum to add to the collection.

Review - Essential Snare Drum Exercises and Mastering The Snare Drum by Mat Marrucci

October 27, 2019 Richard Best

The first thing that struck me about Mastering the Snare Drum was the
sheer weight of the thing. In a little over 100 pages, the book covers
just about everything a snare drummer would need.

I like to think of John Aldridge as a “Drum Jedi Master”.  He is an endless wellspring of drum history, wisdom, experience and creativity.   In this sequel to Part 1, I wanted to share some examples of John’s unique custom works with personal insights from John about their design.  Many of these drums are from my personal collection and are greatly treasured.  It is my hope that drummers will not only appreciate John’s incredible versatility, but also realize that “drum art” can be truly personal.  Drum engraving is not restricted to scrolls and florets!

We've had everybody through SST, drumming-wise. It's been a dream for me. I'm teching for Marco Minnemann, one of my all-time favorites. Oh, my goodness! Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater. Tommy Clufetos with Black Sabbath. Mike Mangini of Dream Theater. Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree, Jay-Z’s drummer, Tony Royster, Jr. They are all jaw-dropping drummers.

I’ll sit back behind the drums in the rehearsal room while they’re working and pretend like I'm fixing a pedal just to watch these guys drum. It's unbelievable. And they are all totally sweet guys. It’s like a brotherhood of drummers. Every day I get to see God-given talent, to see the mechanics, to see what it really takes to get to that level.

1971 Ludwig Citrus Mod Finish...The Waiting Is The Hardest Part

Ludwig first introduced Citrus Mod sometime in mid to late 1968 along with the finish Black Panther. When these two finishes were released, Ludwig was in between catalogs as catalog ‘67(printed in 1966) was the current catalog and it would be several years before catalog ’71 (printed in 1970) would be released. Citrus Mod was featured on the back of catalog ’71 but by the end of the year the color was discontinued and catalog ‘73 (printed in 1972) appeared and Citrus Mod was removed from the color options. This means is that unless a store had a set for display, a dealer had the color in a dealer swatch or you saw another drummer using a set in this finish, it was unlikely that it was known that the color even existed by most consumers when the finish first appeared. All Diets Work! (Slightly related to Thanksgiving and Drums!)

October 24, 2019 Richard Best
diet.jpg

The same might can be said of drum exercises. They all work because they all get your hands (and feet) moving. But, like diets, not all exercises are equal. Some will transport your playing to the next level, while others won’t have much impact on your actual playing, and some may send you off in the wrong direction.

Hudson Music publishes new book - Buddy Rich: One of a Kind - by Pelle Berglund

October 24, 2019 George Lawrence
br-one-of-a-kind-with-max-cover.jpg

The biggest public misperception of Buddy Rich over the years has come from the infamous Bus Tapes; recordings of Rich cussing out his band that the internet has allowed to fester. Yeah, that happened, but that was only .001% of what Buddy was and did. Imagine there being a recording or video of your worst behavior moment that never goes away. Is that all there is to you? No. This book fills in the other 99.99% with first hand accounts of his humor, generosity, struggles and humanity.
